“Many systemic diseases have ocular manifestations that are first discovered during a comprehensive eye examination. The optometrist is often the first to diagnose a health problem such as hypertension or diabetes.”

Dr. Dawn Goedde
Chief, Primary Eye Care

The Primary Vision Care Service provides comprehensive eye examinations to patients ages 13 and older. Each exam includes testing of the visual system and thorough examination of the patient’s ocular and systemic health. In order to fully evaluate the patient’s ocular health, a dilated eye exam is performed during each comprehensive exam. Examining the back of the eye through a dilated pupil is the ideal way to assess the patient’s ocular health. Many ocular diseases do not have symptoms and can only be detected through the dilated exam. If any disease is detected, our attending optometrists will make any and all appropriate referrals to specialists as well as work with the patient’s primary care physician to ensure that the patient receives the most appropriate follow up care. After all testing is complete; our patients receive a spectacle prescription. Your doctor may suggest specific lens materials and lens features to optimize your vision with your new glasses. With more than 2000 frames in our Eyewear Gallery, our licensed opticians offer every patient expert help to find the best frame and state of the art lens designs to provide the best vision possible.

It is an honor for the doctors of the Primary Vision Care Service to provide your eye care needs. To schedule an appointment, please call 614-292-2020 option 1 and ask for an appointment with our doctors.

The American Optometric Association recommends a comprehensive eye examination every one to two years for patients 18-60 and an annual evaluation for patients age 61 and older. Patients at risk should be examined at least every year regardless of age.

Patients at risk include:

  • Patients with diabetes, hypertension, or a family history of ocular disease such as glaucoma or macular degeneration
  • Patients working in occupations that are highly demanding visually or present eye injury hazards
  • Patients taking prescription or nonprescription drugs with ocular side effects
  • Patients who have had eye surgery
