Aniseikonia testing

Aniseikonia

Our Aniseikonia Service is one of only a few clinics in the United States that provide diagnoses and treatment options for patients with symptoms caused by aniseikonia. Symptoms may include eyestrain, headaches, reading difficulty, fatigue, burning, tearing and distorted vision.

Translated from the Greek, aniseikonia means “unequal images”. The images seen by the two eyes are perceived as a different size or shape.

This mismatch between the images seen by each eye can occur due to several conditions including:

  • Anisometropia – A difference in the refractive prescription between the eyes
  • Cataract Surgery – Symptoms of aniseikonia can occur following cataract surgery. This frequently occurs if the surgery is performed on one eye only.
  • Retinal Conditions – Any condition that causes distortion of the retina can result in aniseikonia. Some possible causes include:
    • Macular Pucker
    • Epiretinal Membrane
    • Retinal Detachment Repairs
    • Macular Edema
    • Macular Degeneration

Often when aniseikonia is present, it may be noted that tasks are easier to perform when using only one eye compared to having both eyes open. Using highly specialized instrumentation and the latest in computer testing techniques, these symptoms may be lessened or eliminated with an individualized treatment program consisting of specially designed spectacle lenses and or contact lenses.

Patients have come from across the country and internationally to the Aniseikonia Service for evaluation and treatment options. Frequently these patients are co-managed with their primary care eye doctors and typically require only one visit to the Aniseikonia Service to initiate treatment.
