We are one of the few clinics in the U.S. specializing in aniseikonia diagnosis and treatment
Overview
Aniseikonia is a vision condition in which the images seen by each eye differ in size or shape, making it difficult for the brain to combine them into a single, clear image. This mismatch can lead to a range of uncomfortable symptoms, including:
- Eye strain
- Headaches
- Reading difficulties
- Fatigue
- Burning or tearing
- Distorted or unstable vision
The word aniseikonia comes from the Greek for "unequal images."
Aniseikonia can result from several underlying conditions, such as:
- Anisometropia – A significant difference in the vision prescription between the two eyes.
- Cataract Surgery – Symptoms often develop if only one eye has undergone surgery.
- Retinal Conditions – Distortion of the retina can cause aniseikonia. Common causes include:
- Macular pucker
- Epiretinal membrane
- Retinal detachment repairs
- Macular edema
- Macular degeneration
Many people with aniseikonia find that tasks are easier to perform when using just one eye. Our Aniseikonia Service works to improve binocular vision through advanced diagnostic tools and customized treatment strategies.
Using state-of-the-art equipment and computer-based visual testing, we develop personalized treatment plans. These often include specially designed spectacle or contact lenses that reduce or eliminate symptoms.
Patients from across the U.S. and around the world have traveled to Ohio State’s Aniseikonia Service for care. Most are co-managed with their local eye care providers and typically require just one visit to get started on treatment.
